Is plastic surgery the same as cosmetic surgery? When talking about plastic surgery, the word 'plastic' is derived from the Greek word 'plastikos' which means to mold or to shape. Plastic surgery refers to surgical procedures carried out for functional or aesthetic reasons. Plastic surgery can be divided into two areas - reconstructive surgery and cosmetic (aesthetic) surgery. Reconstructive surgery focuses on undoing or masking the destructive effects of trauma, surgery or disease. Cosmetic surgery is most often performed in order to change features the patient finds unflattering, but there are medical reasons too for cosmetic surgery - for example, breast reduction when orthopedic problems are present. |
