Male Breast Reduction - liposuction and surgery for man boobs

We jokingly refer to them as "man boobs", but for many men, having enlarged male breasts - a condition known as gynaecomastia - is no laughing matter.

Male breasts can develop during puberty and are a fact of life for many teenagers during adolescence because of hormonal fluctuation. It is something that many teens traditionally grow out of as their body develops, but increasing levels of obesity mean that that's not always the case any more.

As well as hormone levels, obesity and some glandural problems causing males to develop breasts, the increase in the use of anabolic steroids is also seen as a reason for the increase in gynaecomastia.

The answer increasingly is surgery.

In the USA, around 20,000 men had breast reduction surgery during 2006. Of them just under 14,000 - or around 70% - fell into the 13 to 19 year old age category.

Earlier this year, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons announced that a record 177 men have had liposuction in the past year to reduce the size of their breasts - eight times the number of men who had chest liposuction three years ago.

Although you are normally in and out of hospital on the same day, breast reduction is performed under general anaesthetic. A cut is made either around the skin surrounding a nipple or under your arm, and excess fat, skin and breast tissue is then removed.
